What Safeguarding means at Micah Projects
Safeguarding means taking active steps to protect people from harm and creating environments where safety, dignity, and respect are at the centre of everything we do.
This includes:
- Preventing harm before it occurs
- Listening and responding when people tell us they feel unsafe
- Creating safe physical, emotional, relational, and online environments
- Supporting people who may be more vulnerable because of their experiences
- Acting quickly and appropriately when concerns arise
Given the potential vulnerabilities of those we support, we carry a heightened responsibility to ensure their safety when accessing our services. Our approach is grounded in trauma‑informed practice, human rights, and cultural safety.

Support for Children, Young People, Adults, and Families
We provide integrated support for people who have experienced harm or are at risk, including:
- Safety planning
- Emotional and practical support
- Advocacy
- Connection to specialist services
- Support through our housing, family, health, and community programs
- Dedicated support for victim‑survivors of institutional abuse through Lotus Services

Four Key Areas
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
We embed this responsibility across all programs, teams, and locations.
Micah Projects Safeguarding Framework is built around four key areas of commitment and supports our approach to continuous improvement.

1. People
We build a safe, skilled, and accountable workforce.
- Staff and volunteers are screened, trained, and supported
- We set clear expectations for safe, respectful behaviour
- We build relationships where people feel heard and able to speak up
- We recognise when someone may be more vulnerable and respond accordingly
- We listen and respond to what people are telling us

2. Environments
We create safe physical, relational, cultural, and online environments.
- Our spaces are supervised, welcoming, and designed to reduce risk
- We assess and manage safety risks across all programs and locations
- We ensure culturally safe and inclusive environments, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and families

3. Responses
We act quickly, respectfully, and in line with our legal and ethical responsibilities.
- We listen with care and take all concerns seriously
- We explain what will happen next and respond in a timely way
- We prioritise the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of the person at the centre
- We work with the appropriate agencies when required
- We provide support, safety planning, and referrals

4. Leadership
We embed safeguarding across governance, systems, and culture.
- Safeguarding is integrated into recruitment, training, supervision, and service delivery
- Leaders model safe, respectful practice
- We monitor, review, and improve our safeguarding systems
- We align with the Queensland Child Safe Standards and National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
- We maintain transparent processes and clear accountability

We acknowledge the courage and experiences of victim‑survivors of childhood institutional abuse, including those supported through Lotus Services. Their voices continue to guide our commitment to safe, accountable, and respectful practice.

Micah Projects is committed to the safety and wellbeing of every person who connects with our services.
We work to create environments that uphold people’s rights, strengthen their wellbeing, and prevent violence, abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Fundamental to our approach is listening and responding to what participants are saying to us
