50 Lives 50 Homes Campaign

Supportive Housing Services

Supportive Housing Outreach

In April 2010, the Queensland and Australian governments announced the site for the development of the Brisbane Common Ground Initiative at Hope Street, South Brisbane. Federal and State Housing Ministers Tanya Plibersek and Karen Struthers made the announcement, which included the official endorsement of Micah Projects as the provider of the onsite support services (with an interim outreach support service while the building is under construction). When completed, the 146 unit development will be a sustainable housing solution for chronically homeless people and people on low incomes in Brisbane. It will complement existing housing and services within the community that address homelessness.

This announcement is the culmination of years of research and advocacy by Micah Projects, our Board and staff and our supporters from St Mary’s Community.

We have now moved from advocacy to implementation of the project. The construction company Grocon has commenced work and the Brisbane Common Ground building will be completed by June 2012.

Micah Projects’ new Supportive Housing Outreach team is supporting people who have been recently housed in the community as part of hot spot responses and the 50 Lives 50 Homes campaign on a interim, outreach basis. These are people who may potentially be the first tenants in the building. While this team is supporting people through outreach support, some will require the 24hour support and concierge service that the Brisbane Common Ground Initiative will offer. When the building is complete, the Outreach team will cease and be replaced by the Onsite support team.

The Supportive Housing Outreach team is based at the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre. Click for contact details
